What is a doula?
The word comes from a Greek word meaning "to serve." In the active stages of labor, doulas serve and support expectant women and their birth partners and families with the emotional and physical aspects of childbirth. Prior to labor, doulas assist women and their families in obtaining information and making informed decisions that will enable the mother to pursue and achieve the birth she desires. Following the birth, doulas make sure the new mother feels supported during the post partum procedures and discuss any of the questions the family has about the birth or labor. Post Partum doulas also can assist families with welcoming their new addition if they need further assistance and support once the baby has arrived.
Who Should use a doula?
Everyone!! No laboring mother can have too much emotional and physical support. Regardless of your desired birth plan, you will benefit from a doula! While most any doula will encourage a natural birth, I recognize that not all moms are the same. A good doula will empower the laboring mother in ways she never imagined in the course of a natural birth. A doula provides a non-judgemental, comforting and knowledgeable presence during labor. Her trust in the process of childbirth and understanding of comfort techniques will help any mother to have the birth she desires, be it natural, or medicated, home-birth or hospital.
Should you prefer a more medically aided approach, such as an epidural, you still need a doula! Regardless of the level of medical intervention you desire, a doula will help you conquer your labor challenges by: helping you to focus, assisting in physical and mental relaxation, providing support when you are pushing, aiding your partner in supporting you and offering support and encouragement if medical interventions do not have the expected results.
Following your delivery, a doula will give you support and guidance for the placenta delivery and post delivery period. Often, during this last phase of labor a mother feels alone and uncertain. Having a doula present can assist the new mother in a more seamless and question-free birth.
No mother should ever be alone during their labor! Even moms who face the challenges of a Cesarean can benefit from the emotional support and familiar, steady presence of a doula.
How will you work with my partner?
I love to work with families! Often your birth partner will want to support you, but be at a loss as to where to start. Doulas can assist birth partners in offering meaningful support and assistance. Many couples find comfort in just having a knowledgeable doula present to confirm that labor is progressing normally. In no way do I replace your partner!
I support that person just as much as I do you!
